Erik ten Hag makes decision over Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire at Manchester United

PA

Erik ten Hag expects Cristiano Ronaldo, and his "goals", to be part of his Manchester United squad next season, along with captain Harry Maguire.

Addressing the media for the first time as United manager, the Dutchman was an engaging presence without divulging too much about his plans for next season and beyond.

There had been question marks over Ronaldo's role under Ten Hag, despite scoring 18 league goals, due to being 37 years old.

But asked whether Ronaldo fits into the project, Ten Hag said: "Of course." Asked to elaborate on what Ronaldo would bring, Ten Hag simply said: "Goals."

On Maguire, who has endured a chastening season littered with mistakes before losing his place under interim boss Ralf Rangnick, Ten Hag said: "Next season is a different season.

"He’s done a good job, he’s a great player, he’s achieved a lot and his contribution to Manchester United, so I’m looking forward to working with him."

Ten Hag did not confirm whether Maguire would stay on as captain for next season.
