ESPN commentator Jon Champion is warned over Luis Suarez ‘cheat’ jibe

FA Cup broadcaster ESPN have “spoken” to commentator Jon Champion after he called Luis Suarez a “cheat” for handling the ball before scoring against Mansfield.

The Uruguayan (above) controlled the ball with his right wrist before steering home Liverpool’s second goal after his initial shot had been saved by Mansfield keeper Alan Marriott in yesterday’s 2-1 third-round win.

An ESPN statement said: “Our policy is for commentators to be unbiased and honest. Inevitably this can involve treading a fine line on occasion and we have spoken to our commentator about this incident.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said fans here should enjoy Suarez while they can.

“He is a wonderful professional,” said Rodgers. “We need to enjoy it whilst he is here because he is a brilliant talent.”

Suarez was sent off for deliberate handball on the goal-line against Ghana in a quarter-final clash at the 2010 World Cup.

Dean Saunders, the former Liverpool striker, was today appointed Wolves manager after the sacking of Stale Solbakken on Saturday.
