England's chastening defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016 may feel like a long time ago, but Gary Neville certainly hasn't forgotten about it.

Roy Hodgson's side crashed out to the Nordic minnows in embarrassing fashion to leave the Three Lions facing up to yet another collective failure at a major international tournament.

Neville left his coaching role after the defeat but captain Wayne Rooney is still very much part of the international fold and has been preparing for England's World Cup 2018 qualifier against Malta this week.

The skipper took some time off to enjoy a spot of golf and stumbled across Neville's golf shoes, complete with initials, before borrowing them.

Rooney tweeted Neville to let him know that his shoes were in safe hands, but probably wasn't expecting a tongue-in-cheek response from the former right back.

Neville obviously had his heart set on a return to collect his belongings only to have an opportunity to do so taken out of his hands thanks to Rooney and co's lacklustre performance in Nice.

Meanwhile, Rooney has retained the captaincy under interim manager Gareth Southgate but his role in the side remains a bone of contention.
