Guus Hiddink was warned Chelsea’s players not to waste their auditions ahead of Antonio Conte’s arrival this summer.

The Italian boss was confirmed as the long-term successor to Jose Mourinho last week, and will take the reins at Stamford Bridge following Italy’s participation at Euro 2016.

Hiddink, who has been in the role on an interim basis since Mourinho’s dismissal last December, admitted that Chelsea’s flops have been presented with a ‘clean slate’ ahead of Conte’s arrival, but warned them not to waste the opportunity that represents following Saturday's defeat to Swansea City.

"It is a clean slate,” said Hiddink, “everyone has to fight for his position with the new manager coming in of course."

"There is that, but when you play at Chelsea you must always be proud and play with internal motivation.

"If you play only with external motivation, worrying about material things or your position, you are slipping away.

"The intrinsic motivation is a condition that has to be there if you are to say a player is suitable for a big club.
