Howard Webb takes charge of Champions League Final

Calling the shots: Howard Webb
11 April 2012

English referee Howard Webb will take charge of the Champions League Final between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, UEFA announced today.

The 38-year-old will be assisted by linesmen Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann for the match at Real Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium.

The three Englishmen also will work together as a team at the World Cup in South Africa while on Saturday the fourth official will be compatriot Martin Atkinson.

It's the first time Webb has been eligible to referee European football's most prestigious club match.

He has been on the international list since 2005 but an English club have been in the Champions League Final for each of the past five seasons.

Webb has proved a lucky omen in finals for Inter boss Jose Mourinho as he was the official when Chelsea won the 2005 Community Shield and 2007 Carling Cup under the Portuguese. Both matches saw 2-1 victories over Arsenal with the second a stormy affair as three players — Chelsea's John Obi Mikel and Arsenal's Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor — were sent off.
