Tottenham have confirmed that club captain and No.1 goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will be out for the rest of the year after dislocating his elbow.

The World Cup-winning goalkeeper fell awkwardly after failing to collect a cross as Spurs were beaten 3-0 at Brighton.

In a statement, Tottenham said: “Hugo Lloris has undergone further assessment this morning after sustaining a dislocated elbow in our match against Brighton on Saturday.

“The findings have shown that although surgery will not be required, our Club Captain has suffered ligament damage and is not expected to return to training before the end of 2019.

“Hugo is currently in a brace and will now undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation under the supervision of our medical staff at Hotspur Way.”

Spurs and France captain Lloris would have joined up with France for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Iceland and Turkey but now misses out.

His national coach, Didier Deschamps – speaking ahead of Tottenham’s announcement – admitted his concern the France captain’s condition.

"He has had tests. It is difficult to say how long he will be out, I am not a medical specialist," Deschamps told a press conference.

"As far as we (France) are concerned, he obviously will not be with us for this camp, nor the next one.

"Processes will be put in place for his rehabilitation. We are talking several weeks, indeed several months.

"He will not return to the pitch in 2019, that's almost certain."

Speaking after the match, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted that the loss of his club captain and No1 goalkeeper had a "massive" effect on his team.

"Of course, we cannot lie," he said. "To concede after three minutes in the way we did and what happened to our captain, it is normal that the impact was massive for the team.

"It is an emotional game and the team was very affected, we never can be in the game.

"We did not show our real performance. I am never going to take the credit away from Brighton, we need to give them the credit too, the team suffered a massive impact after three minutes.”
