Jan Vertonghen has signed a new long-term Tottenham contract that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2019.

Mauricio Pochettino has successfully tied down the nucleus of his squad in recent weeks and Vertonghen has followed suit by committing his future to Spurs.

Vertonghen joined Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2012 and has established himself as a key member of Tottenham's defence.

The Belgian's partnership with Toby Alderweireld has helped transform Spurs into one of the Premier League's best defensive units and securing his services will be greeted warmly by the north London faithful.

Vertonghen is the second Spurs player to sign a new contract this week as Harry Kane agreed a deal to become the best-paid player in the club's history on Thursday.

Pochettino is also hopeful Hugo Lloris will sign a new deal and believes the goalkeeper "wants to stay" in N17.
