Gary Neville believes that John Terry would play a crucial role in John Stones' development if the Everton defender joins the Premier League champions.

The Blues have had two bids for the 21-year-old rejected this summer and Roberto Martinez is determined to retain the services of his prize asset, despite reports of ongoing interest from Stamford Bridge, as Standard Sport understands that Chelsea are preparing a third offer of £35m for Stones.

Stones made 23 Premier League appearances for the Toffees last season and is regarded as one of the most talented central defenders in the country. Neville believes that the youngster would benefit hugely from an opportunity to feature alongside Chelsea skipper Terry at Stamford Bridge.

The 34-year-old's future at the club has been called into question since he was substituted at half time during Chelsea's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend but Neville is adamant that the ex-England captain is an invaluable asset.

"If Chelsea were to sign a John Stones, Terry becomes the most important player at Chelsea for the next three seasons," Neville told the Telegraph.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho could decide to give Terry and Stones a share of responsibilities in defence, if he successfully signs the Everton defender, and Neville believes the latter would learn plenty from the experienced veteran.

"If Stones could watch Terry in games 15 times a season and in training three times a week then his own development will be greatly enhanced."

Stones has four England caps and regular game time this season would improve his chances of claiming a place in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 squad next summer, which is why former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has urged his teammate to stay at Goodison Park.
