Liverpool midfielder James Milner jokes about 'assist' for Fulham goal in crucial win

1/21

James Milner made light of the mistake that helped Fulham net a calamitous equaliser during Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Craven Cottage, calling it an 'assist'.

Milner came off the bench after 70 minutes of Sunday’s Premier League clash, with the Reds leading 1-0 and needing a win to reclaim top spot, and had an instant impact - though not the one he would have liked.

It was his shanked ball that teed up Virgil Van Dijk’s misunderstanding with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, which allowed former Liverpool man Ryan Babel to level the scores at 1-1.

However, the 33-year-old made amends by converting from the penalty spot after Sadio Mane had been fouled by Sergio Rico, and afterwards took to Twitter to sum up his eventful cameo.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, the former England man had joked about being tasked with coming on to help see out the result.

“It was me who put him [Van Dijk] in the mire, to be fair!” Milner said.

“The gaffer said ‘come on and calm it down’, so the best thing to do is to slice it over the top and put Virg under pressure, which wasn’t ideal!”
