Luke Shaw ruled out of Manchester United FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea

Luke Shaw will miss Manchester United’s FA Cup semi final with Chelsea after failing to recover from a twisted ankle – but Brandon Williams is expected to be fit.

Shaw picked up the injury in Monday’s draw with Southampton, and despite hopes he would be ready in time for Sunday’s Wembley clash, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he is likely to face longer on the side lines.

But United can at least call on Williams, who suffered a gash above his eye in that game, which saw him miss Thursday’s win against Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer is refusing to offer Sergio Romero any guarantees that he will hold his place as the club’s traditional cup goalkeeper.

Jesse Lingard could also be involved.

“I don’t think Luke’s going to make it,” he said. “Brandon Williams hopefully will be able to train today and be available.

“The team is not selected yet. Jesse and Sergio both have a good chance of being involved.”

“Jesse is a part of the club. He has worked really hard and he deserves his chance to come back in. We know his qualities. He has different qualities to other players and he knows we value him.”

United will have to beat Chelsea for a fourth time this season if they are to book their place in a first final under Solskjaer.

The Norwegian is refusing to take credit for his success in head-to-heads with Frank Lampard.

“It’s down to the players doing well,” he said. “We’ve been focused in that particular game, we’ve been having the margins, but it’s all down to players when they go there and perform they can beat anyone.”
