Besiktas have slammed “fake” reports suggesting striker Wout Weghorst could leave the club due to a release clause amid interest from Manchester United.
The Netherlands international has reportedly emerged a shock target at Old Trafford following Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious departure in November.
Manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed the club are actively chasing additions to their frontline and the 30-year-old is believed to have emerged as a cut-price option.
A deal, however, could be difficult to do.
Weghorst only joined the Istanbul giants on loan from Burnley in July and Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci hit out at the player for appearing to say goodbye to their fans over the course of the weekend.
Reports suggested the towering forward’s temporary stint could come to an end should a suitor pay a release clause of around £2.2m, thereby allowing the buyer to approach parent club Burnley.
Still, Besiktas have slammed such talk in a fiery club statement.
“After the match of our Football A Team against Kasımpaşa in the Super League, there was a need to make a statement due to speculative news in the media about our football player Wout Weghorst,” it read.
“The claim that there is an exit clause in our football player’s contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a compensation of 2.5 million Euros in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious.
“However, the news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue. The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club.
“We also state that if there is a development on this issue, our esteemed community and the public will be informed.”
