Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino bemoaned his side's failure to 'kill the game' after Stephan El Shaarawy's late header rescued a point for Monaco on Thursday night.

Spurs started confidently in the Stade Louis II and looked set to secure a crucial victory after Erik Lamela fired them into the lead from close range.

However, the north Londoners missed several second half chances and failed to build on the early stages of their performance.

Leonardo Jardim's men grew in confidence and the pressure finally told in the closing stages after Hugo Lloris allowed El Shaarawy's effort to squirm into the net.

Pochettino's side remain top of Group J after Qarabag saw off Anderlecht courtesy of a 1-0 scoreline but the Argentine was frustrated that his young team did not leave with all three points.

“We lost two points. This is our feeling, because second half we were better," said Pochettino.

“But in the second half, 1-0 up, you need to kill the game. When you don’t kill the game off this can happen. They created two chances and the second, they scored.

“We are young squad and need to learn. 1-0 is always a difficult result to manage. Maybe today we need to be more clinical in front of goal.”

Pochettino fielded a strong side against Monaco but Spurs' players cannot dwell on their midweek disappointment as they travel to South Wales to face Swansea City on Sunday afternoon.
