Louis van Gaal has refused to rule out signing Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos this summer.

The Dutchman’s fan-teasing remark came in his latest press conference in the United States, as Manchester United prepare to face San Jose Earthquakes.

Asked whether the club were any closer to signing the Spain international, Van Gaal told reporters.

"I cannot talk about these rumours,” said Van Gaal. “I have said already in a lot of press conferences, it is a process. Maybe Mr Ramos is in the process. You never know."

The arrival of the World Cup winner this summer would strengthen United’s defensive options considerably, not that it’s causing Chris Smalling too much concern.

"There is always competition at Manchester United," Smalling said when asked what effect Ramos' possible arrival could have on his future.

"When I signed there were five centre backs already here.”

"I had to work hard to get past them. At this club you are always going to be compared with the best and you always play with the best."
