Millwall plan to redevelop The Den so it will be fit for the Premier League if the Lions are promoted.

The 20,000-capacity stadium does not meet requirements and Millwall have appointed architects to draw up plans to bring it in line with top-flight standards. Work is needed on areas such as car parking, space for TV trucks, media working areas and drug testing rooms.

Chief executive Steve Kavanagh said: “Last season when we got close to the play-offs we had a survey from the Premier League about the facilities. It was scary. Nowhere near what you require.

“We have to have the ambition and the ability to get into the Premier League. The start of it is setting out what we need, and that takes a lot of land.”

Millwall are involved in a dispute with Lewisham council about a compulsory purchase order [CPO] for land at The Den. The council dropped plans for a CPO and Millwall say they need that space to stage Premier League football.

Kavanagh said: “We are in meetings with the council to get their view and I have one with the mayor in September. He’s been extremely positive with us.”

Millwall have told Aston Villa and Leeds that midfielder George Saville is not for sale.
