Millwall manager Neil Harris is confident his side can upset some of the big spending clubs in the Championship this season.

Eyebrows have been raised by the amount of money that has been splashed this summer but Harris today said Millwall will relish their tag as the underdog.

Relegated Middlesbrough have spent more than £30million on new players and Wolves have been linked with a £20m bid for Burnley striker Andre Gray, while Aston Villa have given former Chelsea captain John Terry a £60,000-per-week contract.

Millwall, in comparison, have spent around £1m on Jake Cooper, Jed Wallace and George Saville, while Ryan Tunnicliffe, Tom Elliott, James Meredith and Conor McLaughlin have joined on free transfers.

Harris said: “Most weeks we will come up against teams with double, triple or even quadruple our budget.

“A lot of teams will have signed one player who is worth more than my whole team, including wages and signings. But we are going to embrace that.

“Millwall are great at being an underdog and we will certainly surprise a few sides this season.”

Millwall, who kick off their campaign away to Nottingham Forest on Friday, are among the favourites to get relegated following their promotion from League One but Harris said: “The target is to stabilise in the division.

“We feel we have spent quite a lot of money over the summer and it is dwarfed by every other club in the division. But we feel we have added wisely to our squad.

“Most weekends teams are going to be expected to beat Millwall and that is going to be a problem for them.”
