Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic insists the Premier League champions will get over their tricky pre-season by showing their quality this season as the club aim to retain their domestic title.

Jose Mourinho's side endured a mixed pre-season ahead of the new campaign after first suffering a surprising 4-2 loss to New York Red Bulls before narrowly beating PSG and Barcelona on penalties.

Following the club's arrival back in the UK, Chelsea then lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the Community Shield and capped off their preparations with a 1-0 loss to Fiorentina at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Despite admitting the Blues had experienced a "difficult" time over the past few weeks, Matic believes Chelsea will show just how good they are over the course of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.

"We had some difficult games against strong teams," the midfielder told Chelsea's official website.

"We trained very well and I’m sure that we will show our qualities over the whole season because we want to win the title again.

"I think I did my job well in pre-season. I did everything I can to make sure I’m in the best condition physically and now I just want to get started."

Matic proved an integral member of Chelsea's title-winning team of last term following his return to the club in January 2013.

And the Serb revealed he is working hard to improve his game even further as the Blues look to win a second successive league title and go further in the Champions League this season.

"For any player, there are no limits to how much you can improve," he said.

"I will try to do even better this season but for me the most important thing is that the team wins.

"I just want to help the team. Last season was good for me but I think I can do even better this time around."
