Queens Park Rangers have been hailed as 'a club with the local community at its heart' after inviting Shepherds Bush residents affected by the recent fire in Shepherds Court to Saturday's Championship clash with Blackburn.

More than 100 firefighters were called out to the huge blaze in a block of flats in Shepherd's Bush on 19 August, with 20 engines sent out to tackle the fire.

The fire led to the 18-storey block of flats being evacuated and caused damage across five floors, with the council arranging temporary accommodation for residents affected by the ongoing renovations.

QPR have invited 20 of the residents affected to Saturday's clash against Blackburn at Loftus Road, drawing praise from Andy Evans, chief executive of QPR in the Community Trust.

Evans said: "The Shepherds Court residents affected by the fire have had a terrible time, with some of them still not able to return to their homes, so we wanted to show our support for them.

"Nothing is a substitute for going back home, but - in the meantime - as a club with the local community at its heart we are delighted to welcome them to Loftus Road."

Cllr Sue Fennimore, Hammersmith & Fulham Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, said: "This is an absolutely fantastic gesture from QPR and we are very grateful.

"We are delighted to work together with the R's on this and I hope it gives those residents affected by the fire something to enjoy following what has been an incredibly upsetting, turbulent and difficult time."

The decision also drew praise on social media, with a number of fans backing the club's generosity.
