Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has described the controversial penalty incident between Loic Remy and Jack Butland a 'moral dilemma'.

Late on in the Blues' 1-0 defeat to Stoke, Remy knocked the ball past Butland, leapt over the onrushing goalkeeper and lost his footing before slicing an effort wide of the post.

And Gallagher believes referee Anthony Taylor was correct to award a goal-kick despite accepting that Remy fell to the ground as a direct result of Butland's failed challenge.

The 58-year-old told Sky Sports: "It's very difficult to give a penalty in that circumstance. The amazing thing is, because he has taken such immense evasive action he has lost his footing.

Player Ratings: Stoke City vs Chelsea

1/14

"If the referee gives a penalty there he has got to send off Jack Butland and you are sending off a player who would say 'I didn't commit a foul'.

"On the one hand we don't want players to dive and this guy has done everything you would expect of him and more - and unfortunately it has backfired on him."
