Richarlison admits World Cup ‘dream’ is in doubt after Tottenham forward suffers calf injury

Richarlison has admitted his place in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup next month is in real doubt after picking up an injury in Tottenham’s win over Everton.

The forward went down early in the second-half in north London and was forced off with a calf strain, before breaking down in tears in a post-match interview and leaving the stadium on crutches.

Brazil get their World Cup campaign underway in Qatar on November 24, with their squad for the tournament named earlier in the month. Richarlison has established himself in the national side, scoring twice against Ghana and once against Tunisia in the recent international break.

Antonio Conte has confirmed the 25-year-old will definitely miss Spurs’ clash against Manchester United in midweek, but the club need to wait for a scan before determining how serious the injury is.

Speaking after the match, Richarlison tried to stay upbeat on the situation but the forward feared the worst as he looked ahead to his chances of playing in the World Cup.

“It’s kind of hard to say because it’s close to the realisation of my dream,” Richarlison told ESPN Brazil.

“I’ve already suffered a similar injury to this but I hope it can heal as soon as possible. The last time when I was at Everton, I was out of action for about two months.

“I know it’s hard to talk at this moment, but let’s see, I’ll recover. I have a scan on Monday but even walking hurts. I have to stay positive if I want to go to Qatar.

“It’s all so close, it’s about a month to go, and we’ve been getting ready, working every day so that nothing serious can happen.

“Unfortunately, today I had this calf injury, but now it’s just a matter of waiting, doing the treatment every day so that I can recover as soon as possible.”
