Tottenham and Wales defender Ben Davies is determined not to settle for second best this season.

Spurs were Premier League title challengers last season only to fall away in the final few weeks of the season while Wales suffered heartbreak at Euro 2016 after being knocked out by Portugal in the semi-finals.

The double blow was difficult to take for Davies but the 23-year-old is adamant the disappointment he has experienced will help drive him on to success with both club and country.

“Football is about winning things. If we can stay top in both competitions, for club and country, then all the better," he told the Sun.

"Being in teams like that you do learn that you can’t really settle for second best if you want to get as far as you can.

“It’s all about having that motivation and determination to be as good as you can be. That’s exactly what I am trying to do."

The early signs suggest that Spurs will be title challengers again this season, having beaten Manchester City at the weekend to move to within a point of Pep Guardiola's early pacesetters.

And Davies believes going so close last term with stand him and his teammates in good stead as they attempt to win Tottenham's first title since 1961.

"Last year it was so close but yet so far.

“All these things might not have too much relevance now but later down the line when we’ve had that experience before then we will not want to go through that again.”
