Tottenham's Harry Winks has been called up to the England squad for the first time after Fabian Delph and Phil Jones dropped out with injuries.

Spurs midfielder Winks had initially been named in the Under-21 squad but will step up to join the senior squad at St. George’s Park ahead of Thursday’s home World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

The 21-year-old, who made his U21 debut last November, has only recently returned from the ankle ligament injury that ended his season in early April and played his first 90 minutes of the league season in Saturday’s 4-0 win at Huddersfield.

Winks’ addition gives England boss Gareth Southgate a 25-man party to choose from for the games against Slovenia and Lithuania, though Dele Alli will miss the second of those ties due to a suspension.

Both Delph and Jones missed training on Monday and will return to Manchester City and United respectively for further tests.

Labelled "the perfect midfielder" by Mauricio Pochettino, he had already been tipped for the England squad by Harry Kane.

"Harry's done great," Kane said of Winks. "He's waited patiently for his chance. He's just got to keep doing what he's doing, keeping his head down.

"He had a great game in midweek in the Champions League (against Apoel Nicosia), he had a great game on Saturday (against Huddersfield).

"For him, he's just got to stay focused, not think about it too much, just concentrate on his job, and what'll happen will happen.

"(Winks is) a great player. On the ball, technically he's fantastic. He reads the game very well, he can drive past players.

"It isn't my decision, it's (Southgate's) decision. But all he's got to do is do well for (Spurs) and then do well for the Under-21s in this camp, and that's all he can do."
