Tottenham defender Juan Foyth joins Villarreal on loan after signing new contract

Tottenham defender Juan Foyth has joined Villarreal on loan after signing a new contract.

The Argentine defender has put pen to paper on a deal that commits his future to Spurs until 2023. Foyth has then joined the LaLiga side on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old joined Tottenham from Estudiantes in 2017 and broke into the first team during the 2018/19 season.

However, injuries decimated his season last year, the defender making just four Premier League appearances.

Jose Mourinho has moved to improve his backline this summer with the signing of full-back Matt Doherty from Wolves, while Jan Vertonghen has left to join Benfica after his contract expired.

Mourinho's side have endured a hectic start to the campaign, balancing their Premier League and League Cup commitments with a Europa League qualifying campaign that has forced them to play three times per week.
