11 April 2012

Wayne Rooney vowed England will win the World Cup as he picked up a hat-trick of trophies in Manchester.

The Manchester United and England star was awarded gongs for the Goal of the Season against Arsenal, the Fans' Player of the Season and the Players' Player of the Season at his club's awards ceremony at Old Trafford last night.

Presenting the Players' Player of the Season trophy, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Rooney asked him every Friday: "Am I playing, am I playing?" and he answered, "What a silly question!"

Rooney accepted his awards in front of Manchester United team-mates and their wives and girlfriends.

Asked about England's World Cup chances, the 24-year-old striker, who is recovering from ankle and groin injuries, said: "We live in the best country in the world so I think we will win it."
