Front-runners suffer defeats

Salford ended a run of five derby defeats with a stunning 18-16 victory over Engage Super League table-toppers Warrington.

The home side, playing against a strong wind in the first half, led 10-6 at the break but the Reds turned up the heat to notch their best win of a topsy-turvy season.

Huddersfield failed to take advantage of Warrington's defeat as lowly Wakefield produced a second shock of the day in their 13-10 triumph at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The Giants would have gone top of the Engage Super League with victory but produced a largely woeful performance, in contrast to their opponents' dogged commitment in miserable conditions.

Former Giant Luke George set them on their way, Gareth Moore kicking the conversion and adding two penalties to put the Wildcats 10-0 in front at the break.

Another penalty from Moore extended their lead and although Shaun Lunt crossed the line, Moore's drop-goal settled matters to give Wakefield their first win in four matches, despite Joe Wardle's try setting up a nervy finale.

Jamie Foster kicked an injury-time penalty to help St Helens snatch a 14-14 draw and take advantage of the defeats at the top of the table.

Reigning champions Wigan blew a commanding half-time lead as spirited Castleford earned a 22-22 draw at a rain-soaked PROBIZ Coliseum.

Winger Ryan Hall scored a hat-trick of tries as Leeds returned to winning ways with an eight-try 44-14 win over Hull KR in a Headingley deluge.

Harlequins' torrid run of form continued at the KC Stadium as Hull's four internationals were able to back up from Friday's Origin clash with relative ease in a 38-6 win.
