Germany were today closing in on appointing Jurgen Klinsmann as their new head coach.

The former Tottenham striker has been offered the job with ex-German forward Oliver Bierhoff as his assistant.

Klinsmann, who runs a sports marketing firm in California, has met with German football chief Franz Beckenbauer. He said: "I'm overjoyed. We had a very frank and constructive meeting in New York lasting five hours. I indicated that I was available to participate actively in the construction and putting in place of new structures."

Rudi Voller resigned as coach after the Germans' terrible Euro 2004 campaign.
