14 April 2012

The 33-year-old has been irked by suggestions at the weekend that he wasn't giving his all during a defeat by the Republic of Ireland, with renowned Irish pundit Eamonn Dunphy suggesting Giggs was saving himself for United's Champions League tie against Roma in Italy next week.

"Who said that?" said Giggs mischievously yesterday. "I don't know who he is but I have been criticised on and off throughout my career so it just goes over my head. I think to rise to it and to respond would just give it credence.

"I can honestly say that I have tried to play well in every game I have ever played for Wales. It didn't happen for us on Saturday in Dublin but it wasn't because I — or anybody else — wasn't trying. It was just a bad day and we will be trying to put it right tonight."

Wales face the prospect of taking on San Marino at a sparsely-populated Millennium Stadium tonight — only 15,000 fans are expected — as they look to salvage some pride in Group D.

WALES (4-4-2): Coyne; Ricketts, Evans, Nyatanga, Bale; Davies, Koumas, Fletcher, Giggs; Bellamy, Easter.
