Harlequins hand Northampton a shock

13 April 2012

Will Greenwood's passion for Manchester City spilled onto the Stoop as he helped produce a major Tetley's Bitter Cup quarter-final shock as Harlequins defeated European champions Northampton 11-6.

Greenwood will now face his former Leicester team-mates at the Stoop on 6 January in a semi-final that will provide the London club with a much-needed sell-out crowd.

The 4,400 who witnessed Quins' best performance of the season probably missed the signals going out to Greenwood on the pitch.

His friends were giving Greenwood a constant update of City's fortunes and by the end of the game he was able to wear a huge grin as five fingers told him Everton had been well and truly stuffed, 5-0.

Greenwood, whose return to England colours was earned by an excellent run of form for Quins, said: "It was great seeing the score go up and up and that result, plus this quarter-final win, made it a memorable day.

"I am going back to Leicester over Christmas and will be seeing some of their guys and I am sure there will be plenty of banter." Captain David Wilson was at his foraging best against Saints and full-back Jamie Williams took a lead from his skipper and stole a critical ball on his own line just before the end to ensure a much needed confidence boost for Quins, who are second from bottom in the Premiership.
