Injured Usain Bolt out of showdown with Tyson Gay

13 April 2012

Usain Bolt has withdrawn from the Diamond League meeting in New York next week with a stiff Achilles tendon but the triple Olympic champion hopes it will not affect the rest of his season.

He was scheduled to face American Tyson Gay in a 100metres showdown between the world's fastest men. The decision to pull out was a precaution and Bolt's agent expects him to resume racing after a two-to-three week lay-off.

"At the moment there is no change to the rest of his programme," said Ricky Simms.

Bolt, who has an inflammation in the left Achilles tendon, is not scheduled to run again until a 200m in Lausanne on 8 July.

Bolt's sole outing in the new Diamond League saw him win a 200m in Shanghai. The sprinter is expected to race five more times on the circuit this term.
