Injury forces Giles out of First Test

14 April 2012

Ashley Giles has been ruled out of tomorrow's First Test because of his worrying hip injury.

The spinner had a cortisone injection last week and took part in England's practice sessions at Lord's this morning but will not be risked.

The worry is he may need a keyhole operation at some stage to cure the problem, although that is thought to be a last resort. Captain Michael Vaughan said: "Ashley has had a lot of success and will be missed this week.

"He just needs a little bit more rest and he may be available for next week's Second Test."

Giles has been in fine form for Warwickshire, taking 31 wickets so far in under a month. He will be replaced by Gareth Batty.
