James fears player exodus

12 April 2012

England goalkeeper David James is happy to stay at Portsmouth but fears players will leave Fratton Park in January to balance the books.

Pompey manager Tony Adams admitted he would not stand in the way of members of his squad wanting to leave, although James feels his team-mates would not be pushing for transfers elsewhere following Harry Redknapp's departure to Tottenham.

"I'd imagine that if any players left, it would be down to financial reasons and nothing else," the Pompey keeper told The News. "You could argue that if some do leave, it would have happened with Harry had he been here any way."

He added: "Of course, I'm hoping everything will stay exactly as it is. We've got some excellent players and I don't know of any who want to leave just because Harry has gone."

James insists he wants to stay at Pompey, where he has revived his career under Redknapp and forced his way back as first-choice for England.

"Although Harry has left nothing has changed as far as I'm concerned regarding my future at the club," he added.

"I'm very confident for the future with the players we've got here.

"If we'd lost half of the players when Harry left, then things might be slightly different. But we haven't lost any players and I'm confident we'll continue to do well."
