Leeds claim dramatic win

Leeds snatched a sensational derby victory for the second time in five years at the Millennium Stadium when they were controversially awarded a penalty try three minutes from the end of a dramatic 32-28 win over Bradford.

The Rhinos' 100% record in the Magic Weekend looked to be over when they trailed a new and vibrant Bradford 28-10 after 52 minutes but they struck back with four tries in the last 18 minutes to stun the Bulls fans and rekindle painful memories of 2007.

Four years ago, referee Steve Ganson wrongly awarded Leeds a penalty and failed to spot an offside when Jordan Tansey scored the try that secured a 42-38 victory. Ganson was back in the middle on Sunday but it was video referee Richard Silverwood who awarded the try to winger Ben Jones-Bishop after he had been obstructed by former Leeds player Gareth Raynor as he chased his own kick to the line.

That enabled the 22-year-old Jones-Bishop to complete a hat-trick, matching the feat of Bradford second rower Elliott Whitehead, who certainly did not deserve to be on the losing side.

Ben Galea and Kris Welham scored twice as Hull KR recovered from 14-0 down to launch their season with a comfortable 34-22 win over rivals Hull FC.

Debutant Blake Green and Clint Newton also touched down as Rovers wrapped up the Engage Super League's Millennium Magic weekend in Cardiff in impressive fashion.

Kirk Yeaman and Lee Radford tries had Hull in command early on but Rovers took the sting out of their opponents as they scored 28 unanswered points and further tries from new signing Will Sharp and Yeaman were little consolation for Hull.

Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke watched Gareth Thomas make a winning return to the home of Welsh rugby as the Crusaders clawed back two of the four points they were docked for going into administration with a 42-12 win over Salford.

Rourke was in Cardiff to watch Thomas in action as he prepares to portray the former British Lions captain in a film, but the Welshman was overshadowed by hat-trick hero Michael Witt as Crusaders made an impressive start to the Engage Super League season.

Witt, who missed the second half of last season through injury, demonstrated his immense value to the Crusaders through his scoring prowess while former Bradford winger Stuart Reardon marked his debut with a brace of tries.
