Ljungberg sidelined for Sweden

12 April 2012

Freddie Ljungberg has been ruled out of Sweden's Euro 2008 qualifier against Iceland on Wednesday due to a calf problem.

The Arsenal midfielder sustained the injury after 56 minutes of Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Spain in Stockholm and will definitely miss the midweek trip to Reykjavik.

"It's sad but the fact is I can't play," said Ljungberg, who will now fly back to London in a bid to be fit for the Gunners' Barclays Premiership home clash with Watford on Saturday.

Sweden coach Lars Lagerback had already called up Elfsborg's Stefan Ishizaki as a replacement before news of Ljungberg's withdrawal had been confirmed.

Lagerback said: "Of course it's bad for us and sad for Fredrik.

"We have alternatives in our squad but I will not go in to details about our team on Wednesday."
