McLeish tells of Rangers 'fairytale'

14 April 2012

Alex McLeish described his team's last-gasp dramatic Scottish Premier League title win as "the biggest spine-tingling moment of my life".

Motherwell's Scott McDonald scored two goals in the last three minutes to beat Celtic and hand the title to Rangers yesterday, who defeated Hibernian.

"To get that news from Fir Park was a bit of a fairytale," said McLeish. "You never stop believing, of course, but I was a bit surprised Motherwell won. It has been a phenomenal finish to the season. When it sinks in I will probably reflect and say it is the highlight of my career. We have silenced our critics."

Rangers chairman David Murray congratulated McLeish and promised his backing ahead of the club's assault on the Champions League next season.

Chief executive Martin Bain said he believed the SPL title win vindicated the club's faith in McLeish. The Gers boss was under intense pressure earlier in the season after Celtic opened up a seven-point gap and CSKA Moscow had dumped the team out of the Champions League.

But the Ibrox board resisted the calls for McLeish to be dismissed and he has rewarded that stance with the SPL title and the CIS Insurance Cup this season.

Bain said: "I know there was a lot of talk about Alex's position earlier in the season but we stood by him because we always had faith in his ability. This totally vindicates the position we took. Alex deserves enormous credit for winning two trophies this season."
