Monty is passed fit but faces hard test

David Smith13 April 2012

Colin Montgomerie has been passed fit to play in the US Open here at Southern Hills despite a fright while the former European No1 was under-going treatment for a back injury.

The Surrey-based Scot, who was forced to pull out of the second round of the English Open last Friday, heard a loud 'crack' during a visit to a London osteopath. He admitted: "When that happened, I thought 'that's my career over'!"

While he is now physically fit, Montgomerie will need to call on his reserves of mental strength tomorrow when he tees off for the first round in the group immediately ahead of that headed by tournament favourite Tiger Woods.

There are bound to be distractions as the large gallery seek the best vantage points to watch Woods, and Montgomerie's notorious relationship with American crowds will be tested to the full.
