Murray aims for stunning debut

Metro14 April 2012

A Wimbledon debut in front of the world's expectant tennis fanatics is unlikely to knock 18-year-old Andrew Murray out of his stride. After all, Murray is a teenage junior Grand Slam champion whose first Davis Cup match produced victory over the fourth best doubles team in the world - Israel - and a player who resolutely believes he has what it takes to reach the top.

Second best will never be good enough for the Dunblane-born player, who has emerged from a batch of promising Britons to firmly establish himself as the big hope to follow Tim Henman thanks to victory in the US Open junior tournament last year. 'I hate losing,' says Murray. 'I don't play any tournaments to come second best. So I think, for me, when I go into every tournament I want to win every single match. I believe I can go right to the top.' Meanwhile, ten years ago Murray's fellow Briton Greg Rusedski breezed into Wimbledon wearing a Union Jack bandana - despite being born in

Montreal. He reached the fourth round that year, cheered on by a British public who did not quite know what to make of the left-hander. But following his successful fight against drugs allegations last year, Rusedski re-ignited his enthusiasm for tennis by leading his adopted nation to Davis Cup victory against Israel. He may not get past more than a couple of rounds at Wimbledon but no longer can critics question his commitment. Gutsy Greg is a true Brit at last.
