Murray holds all the aces

12 April 2012

Andy Murray believes the key to Wimbledon glory lies in the numbers his increasingly powerful serve is recording on the Centre Court radar gun.

The British number one hit 136mph in his 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory over Belgium's Xavier Malisse and, more importantly, served 16 aces and conserved energy for the tougher challenges ahead which begin with a third-round encounter with Germany's Tommy Haas on Saturday.

Murray explained: "My serve is one of the best parts of my game, winning over 80% of the points when it's going in. It's something I've worked on a lot and it's helping me out in matches."

He added: "I take a lot of confidence from managing to keep my cool and serve big in the important moments. I feel very confident winning two matches in straight sets. Can't start much better."

Murray followed up his entertaining opener against Fabrice Santoro with something of a demolition job against Malisse.

But it was the composure and control with which both victories were executed which suggests the 12th seed can progress deep into the second week.

He said: "Before the matches, you get the butterflies and the excitement, but when you actually get out on court and play the first few games, that helps to calm you down.

"So far it's been good. Serve's good. Return's good. Moving well. The more matches you play, you're going to get more confidence in all of your shots.

"To win your first two matches in straight sets is obviously what you want to do, but neither of the matches were completely perfect.

"There were some things I could have done better. But I've not used up too much energy and I'll be fresh for my next match."
