Nieminen fires Davis Cup warning

14 April 2012

Jarkko Nieminen sent out an early warning for Britain's Davis Cup team when he beat Spain's Carlos Moya today to reach the semi-finals of the Thailand Open in Bangkok.

Nieminen is likely to come up against Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski in a Europe/Africa Group One Davis Cup match next April if Finland manage to knock out Luxembourg.

Spain have reached the final of this year's Davis Cup and Moya, who was a quarterfinalist at the French Open earlier this year, was seeded three in Bangkok. But Nieminen beat him 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 and the left-hander will now meet American Taylor Dent, who eased through when French opponent Nicolas Thomann retired with foot injury after losing the first set 6-3.

In today's other quarter-finals, local hero Paradorn Srichaphan faces Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic and top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, of Spain, plays Frenchman Gregory Carraz.
