Jordan Spieth missed out on breaking Tiger Woods’s record for the youngest player to win a career Grand Slam but the American believes this has been a great year for him.

His triumph at the Open last month left the US PGA Championship as the only Major title missing from his CV.

However, on Sunday the 24‑year‑old finished 10 shots adrift of champion Justin Thomas at Quail Hollow, ending his bid to better the mark set by Woods, who was five months older when he completed the clean sweep in 2000.

“We won one of the Majors,” said Spieth, the ‘we’ referring to himself and his caddie Michael Greller.

“I understand that’s a great year in the Majors. If I did this every year, I would go down as the greatest player ever to have played the game.

“Winning them is so difficult you can have a fantastic year without winning a major. Look at what Tiger Woods did in 2013. Tiger won five events, including a Players Championship but did not win a Major.”
