Possebon’s leg is not fractured

Horror show: Emanuel Pogatetz’s foul
13 April 2012

Manchester United's Rodrigo Possebon did not break his leg as was initially feared after a horrendous tackle by Middlesbrough's Emanuel Pogatetz last night.

The midfielder was carried off during his side's 3-1 Carling Cup win, but a United spokesman said today: "Rodrigo did not suffer a break. He was kept in hospital overnight for observation and to assess whether there was any ligament damage to his knee."

Sir Alex Ferguson was furious with Pogatetz, who was sent off for the shocking 66th-minute lunge.

"I hope I never see anything like it again," said the United boss.

"The thing that gets me about challenges like that is that the opponent always claims he has done nothing wrong.

"He [Pogatetz] should have just walked off the field. Then you get their bench screaming that it wasn't a sending off. It was an absolutely terrible tackle."

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his first start of the season with his first goal since last season's Champions League Final.
