Quick wickets boost England

England took two quick wickets early on the third morning at The Wanderers to raise hopes of an unlikely fightback in the final Test against South Africa.

Stuart Broad struck first, as Hashim Amla went for the addition of only two runs to his overnight 73 - and then Ryan Sidebottom saw off Jacques Kallis.

Both wickets fell on 217 as South Africa moved from 215 for two to 232 for four after half-an-hour's play.

Their lead was therefore 52 as they sought a major first-innings advantage in pursuit of the victory required to snatch a drawn series.

England need only to avoid defeat here, meanwhile, to cling on for a famous 1-0 triumph.

They clawed back a little ground when Amla followed a little swing from Broad and edged behind, where Matt Prior took a diving one-handed catch in front of first slip in the first full over of the day.

Kallis followed almost immediately when his attempted hook at Sidebottom took the glove and somehow looped to gully, where James Anderson took another fine catch.
