Reid withdrawn from Republic squad

12 April 2012

Blackburn have withdrawn Steven Reid from the Republic of Ireland squad after the midfielder was surprisingly recalled this week.

Reid is near full fitness after 14 months of problems with knee and back injuries but Rovers boss Mark Hughes does not feel he is ready for top-level action.

The 26-year-old will now stay with Rovers next week rather than report for Ireland ahead of their Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales.

Hughes said: "It was a boost for Steven and we are grateful to them for that because he has been out so long.

"They wanted him back into the fold at the earliest opportunity but unfortunately it has come too soon for him, he is not ready.

"We spoke to the Irish FA and they understand the situation. He's obviously going to benefit more from a reserve game next week and hopefully a couple more in the international break."

Reid will not be considered as Rovers put their unbeaten away record in the Premier League to the test at Manchester United on Sunday.
