Report: McManaman set for Hong Kong

12 April 2012

Former England international Steve McManaman is on the verge of signing for Hong Kong First Division League side Hong Kong Rangers, according to reports.

The 34-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder, who said he had retired from football in 2005 after an unsuccessful spell with Manchester City, could link up with Rangers before the end of the year according to the South China Morning Post.

Since leaving City, McManaman has been working as a TV commentator for ESPN Star in Asia during 2006.

The former England Under-21 captain, who won the Champions League on two occasions with Real, made 37 appearances for England and played at the 1998 World Cup and European Championships in 1996 and 2000.

He made the last of his England appearances under Sven-Goran Eriksson during the qualifying campaign for the 2002 World Cup in Japan, but eventually missed out on a place in the squad.

McManaman made his debut for Liverpool in the 1991-92 season, when the Merseyside club lifted the FA Cup, before leaving Anfield in 1999 for Real after winning the 1995 League Cup and after making over 350 appearances.

He made over 150 appearances for the Primera Liga side before joining Kevin Keegan at City in 2003, where he played on 44 occasions but struggled with a series of injuries.

McManaman was last in Hong Kong in 2003 before his departure from Real as the Spanish giants played a exhibition match against a joint China-Hong Kong team in August 2003.
