Rossi sees Magpies through

Giuseppe Rossi marked his first start for Newcastle with a debut goal as Glenn Roeder's side survived foul weather conditions on Tyneside to book their place in the Carling Cup fourth round.

The on-loan Manchester United striker struck three minutes after half-time to fire the Magpies ahead on a treacherous pitch and provided them with the platform to see off Portsmouth 3-0.

Peruvian midfielder Nolberto Solano scored Newcastle's second goal five minutes later with a thumping header from substitute Damien Duff's cross, and then finished things off with his second of the night on 90 minutes.
