Rowley to retire

12 April 2012

Former England hooker Paul Rowley is to retire as a player later this month to concentrate on his role as coach at National League One club Leigh.

Rowley, 32, who played for England in the 2000 World Cup, will hang up his boots after the Centurions' next home game against Sheffield Eagles on April 29.

"It's not a decision that I've made over the last week," he said. "It's one that has been troubling me for some time now. I've got standards and at the moment I can't maintain my own standards. It's time to pack in."

Rowley helped Leigh gain promotion to Super League thanks to their National League Grand Final triumph of 2004 and led his side to victory in the Northern Rail Cup final last summer.

"Lifting that Cup was something I will never ever forget," he said. "That beats international recognition for me. It was my proudest moment."

He has so far made 229 appearances, 156 of them in Super League, in a career that began at Leigh in 1993 and took in spells at Halifax and Huddersfield before returning to Hilton Park four years ago.
