Door opens for Care return

Harlequins’ Danny Care could be in sight of a Test return after injury forced Ben Youngs out of England’s tour of South Africa.

Scrum-half Youngs put in an impressive two-try display in Saturday’s Second Test 36-27 loss in Johannesburg but injured his shoulder.

While that puts Lee Dickson — a substitute in the first two Test defeats — in the frame to start Saturday’s match in Port Elizabeth, it also clears the way for Care to resurrect his international career. The 25-year-old, capped 32 times, missed the World Cup through injury and was then dropped for the Six Nations by Stuart Lancaster after a series of off-field incidents.

Care responded by finishing the domestic season strongly and then impressed for an England XV in last week’s tour victory over the Southern Barbarians in Kimberley.

Head coach Lancaster said: “We now have the opportunity to look at Lee and Danny.”
