Jason Robinson’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final predictions

We have reached the quarter-finals and the disappointment of England’s absence is still strong, but the World Cup has moved on without the hosts and the four matches are going to make for compelling viewing at the weekend.

Ireland are having to come to terms with the loss of flanker Peter O’Mahony and the likely loss of captain Paul O’Connell, the latest players to fall victim to injury in this World Cup. Wales, who have been hit harder by injuries than any other country, will be without wing Liam Williams for the rest of the tournament.

There is no doubt that players at Test level are bigger, stronger and faster than ever before and it does take its toll. Players are pushing themselves to the limit to try to get that edge over the opposition and it seems that when someone suffers an injury in this tournament it is a significant one. That is just the nature of the modern game.

But having now reached the knockout stages, it is about trying to get your best players out onto the pitch. There are no second chances and defeat means you are heading home. Here’s my verdict on the World Cup quarter‑finals…
