Saints plump for Pearson as their new boss

Championship strugglers Southampton have appointed Nigel Pearson as their new manager.

The former Newcastle coach, who left St James' Park following Sam Allardyce's sacking, replaces new Scotland manager George Burley at St Marys.

His own boss: Pearson has spent much of his post-playing career as a coach

This will be Pearson's first stab at management since leading Carlisle to league survival in the 1998/99 season. Since then he has spent his time in coaching, first at West Brom under Bryan Robson and then Newcastle.
