On the record: Rajiv Ouseph

Top of his game: Rajiv Ouseph is England's number 1 ranked badminton player.

Sport: Badminton.

Record holder? The Londoner picked up his third title of the season with a hard-fought 21-18, 16-21, 21-18 victory over Sweden’s Henri Hurskainene in the final of the Finnish Open at the weekend. The 25-year-old’s improved form is perfectly timed for the European Championships in Sweden later this month, one of the last major tournaments ahead of the Olympic Games.

Off the record: Ouseph’s parents hail from Kerala in India but moved to England in their mid-twenties before settling in Hounslow, where Ouseph was born. His father, who works in radar defence engineering, was a keen badminton player and his son, along with his sisters Reshmi and Rajani, all took up the sport in their youth.

Chance of an Olympic record? Back in 2010, Ouseph was ranked 11th in the world but he has tumbled down the rankings since then, although his win in Finland is edging him back towards the top 20.

A medal would be a long shot at London 2012 despite his being Britain’s leading singles player in the sport.
