Spurs in £1m deal for Davenport

Tottenham have signed Coventry centre-half Calum Davenport in a £3million deal.

The move casts further doubt over the future of Dean Richards and Anthony Gardner as Spurs continue to revamp their playing squad under French coach Jacques Santini.

Richards has yet to figure in Santini's plans and Gardner has failed to impress since the former French boss took charge in July. Spurs will pay £1.1m for Davenport with the remainder of the cash for the 21-year-old paid out on appearances.

Davenport played for Coventry in the 2-1 win against West Ham last night and then left to link up with the England Under-21 squad. Tottenham's Sporting Director Frank Arnesen said: "He's a great talent with special qualities, a very promising central defender who possesses a good mentality and who will further enhance our growing squad."

Davenport becomes the 11th summer signing. He made 84 appearances for Coventry and was the club's player of the year last season.
