Jay Clarke's Wimbledon dream was ended by his idol Roger Federer as the Swiss legend continued his quest for a ninth Wimbledon title.

The 20-year-old earned the right to share Court One with the Swiss, a player who Clarke admitted he grew up trying to copy.

Clarke had shown glimpses of his ability in the first round after beating American qualifier Noah Rubin, but Federer would provide a much sterner test.

The Brit was outclassed in the first set, however, struggling to deal with Federer's flawless serve and failed to take advantage of two break points which would prove fatal.

The second set was like an entirely different match as Clarke stood firm and took Federer to a tiebreak.

Having lost a set in his opener against Lloyd Harris, Federer was determined to avoid a repeat and stepped things up, winning the tiebreak with relative ease.

With a two-set advantage under his belt, it never felt like the 37-year-old would concede his advantage as he closed out a 6-1, 7-6, 6-2 victory in one hour and 36 minutes.
